Where To Find Truth
“…and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Most of us are familiar with these words of Christ recorded in John 8:32. What we are not so familiar with, by and large, is the preceding verse that gives it its context:
“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples…”
To know truth and to be set free by it, we must be willing to receive it from the right source: the Word of God. The implication is, of course, that only those who fully devote themselves to Christ and His Word will ever find the freedom that truth grants.
If you refuse to acknowledge Christ as your ultimate source of truth, you are left with only two other options: ourselves or the world around you. The Bible speaks to both.
As to ourselves:
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” – Proverbs 14:12
“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” – Proverbs 12:15
And to the world:
“For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness,’ and again, ‘The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.’ – I Corinthians 3:19-20
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” – I John 2:15-17
The contention of the Bible is that truth is exterior to ourselves – it is outside of us. It is not innate or incidental. It does not occur to us naturally.
To know truth, to see ourselves as we really are and the world as it really is - to be unplugged from the Matrix - we must submit to the authority of Christ as revealed in the Bible. All else is slavery masquerading as freedom.
