Do Not Trust the Tools

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” - Psalm 20:7

Some trust in finances. Research. Data. Politics. Statistics. Psychoanalysis. Marketing strategies. 401(k)’s. Nutrition. Exercise. Metrics. Stocks. Budgets. Investments. Psychology. Gurus. Ideology. Government. Genealogy. Social media. Growth. Self-help books. Portfolios. Education. Industry awards. Charisma. Minimalism. Study. Tradition. Degrees. Positive thinking. Trial and error. Environmentalism. Free markets. Meditation. Retirement plans. Real estate. Reading. Redistribution. Reparations. Technology. Achievements. Good intentions. Work ethic. The human spirit.

All of these things are good things. But none of them are ultimate things. They cannot bear the weight of ultimate trust. Use them. Do not depend on them. They are tools to utilize, not gods to hope in.

“Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.” - Psalm 127:1

Do you believe this? Do you believe Christ when He says, “Apart from me, you can do nothing,” in John 15:5? Are you looking to God for assistance or you are you looking to Him for everything?

Let your trust rest in the one place strong enough to hold it. Make use of the tools available to you, but do not hope in them. Reserve that for the One who supplied the tools in the first place.

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
my mighty rock, my refuge is God.” - Psalm 62:5-7
