The Inversion

"Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!" - Isaiah 5:20

Inversion is one of the hallmarks of the sinful mind and a woefully inadequate worldview.

Might I suggest that one of the ways this inversion takes place is not just within the realms of behavior and its endorsement (see Romans 1:32), but also in the switch in logic that takes place between big, sweeping, universal statements with those that need to be carefully parsed with nuance and precision.

Take, for instance, "Love wins."

Presented as grand, broad brush statement that only truly repugnant people would disagree with, for a properly thinking mind it begs the questions: Who (or what) gets to define what love is? What does love win against? Are all kinds of love equal in their legitimacy? If not, do they all win? What if people have different understandings of what is and what is not appropriate according to their own definitions of 'love'... which one is right and how do you know?

But you're not supposed to think about any of that. You're simply supposed to agree with the sentiment and avoid any hint of incredulity.

Conversely, for much of the "Love wins" crowd, God's more universal and blanket statements get diced, conditioned, modified and nuanced to death. Think of the Bible's prohibitions on illicit sexual behavior, female pastors, divorce or even the use of foul language. All of a sudden, clear, precise and unmistakable directives are treated like dense mysteries or culturally contextual outliers that can be safely ignored. Entire books are written and published explaining to Christians why they don't need to do what God has clearly said to do.

The black and white is made grey and the grey is made black and white.

Be on the lookout for those who take complex, intricate issues and attempt to reduce them to inappropriately objective and morally simple Yes/No questions. Similarly, watch out for those who take the universal declarations of God and the truly solid foundational truths and attempt to parse them apart to make them personal and subjective or even no longer relevant.
